The System Operator is mandated in accordance with the Electricity (Grid Code) Regulations, 2013 to coordinate operations of the Zambia Interconnected Power System (IPS). Network Operation

The SO is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the IPS to ensure network safety, security, and reliability by providing the following operational services to Grid Participants:

  • Real-time Operation and Control of the Zambia Interconnected Power System under normal and abnormal network conditions.
  • Energy Balance by scheduling the dispatch of Generation and Ancillary Services.
  • Ensuring short term reliability of the system by provision of ancillary services.
  • Coordination of System planned outages and maintenance programs.
  • Management of Grid connection processes and requirements of equipment.
  • System incidents reporting, analysis, and investigation.
  • Establishment and maintenance of operational procedures and guidelines to for operations of the IPS under all system conditions.
  • Provision of system operation performance information to all participants of the Grid.

Administration of the Grid Code

The System Operator serves as the Grid Code Secretariat and performs the following functions:

  • Coordination of the activities of the Grid Code Technical Committee (GCTC) and its associated Expert Teams.
  • Maintenance of a register of all the Grid Code Participant.
  • Funding of the administrative activities of the GCTC on a cost recovery basis.
  • Submit amendments and exemptions to the ERB following reviews by the GCTC
  • Manage the documentation relating to this Code and disseminate information to parties
